Situated on the alluvial plane between the Po, Tanaro and Bromida rivers the province of Alessandria has many valleys and rolling hills. Being situated in a strategic position the city of Alessandria has long been a military stronghold. Known as “the city of silver” Alessandria is an important junction for railways and motorways. The city of Alessandria has many buildings from the 1700’s such as the Ghini Palace and the old Town Hall and the Cuttica Palace. Other important towns in the province are Valenza on the banks of the River Po, which is considered the European capital of hand-crafted jewellery made with precious stones and gold. In Ovada tourists can visit the castles and its ancient historic center which is home to the Loggia of St. Sebastian, the Church of St. Dominic, the oratories of St. John the Baptist and the Most Holy Annunciation and the house where St. Paul of the Cross was born. The ancient Roman town of Acqui Terme is famous for its restorative natural springs and offers visitors a weekend of total relaxation in one of its many spas. This region is also famous for its good food and excellent wine. The region produces several excellent wines that have the prestigious status of DOC and DOCG wines. Truffles are also found here and used in many traditional dishes. Other typical products are Krumiri, biscuits made in Casale Monferrato and the chocolate made in Novi Ligure, home to the Pernigotti chocolate factory since 1860.
