Ancona The province of Ancona is one of the provinces in the East of the Marche region positioned on the Adriatic Sea. Ancona has many valleys such as the Cesano Valley, the Misa Valley (the Valleys Misa and Nevola), the Esino Valley (Vallesina) and the Musone Valley. Through each of them a river flows bearing the name of the relative valley. The most important source of income for this province is undoubtedly the sea. Ancona has a very important port, which is crucially located for the traffic that crosses the Adriatic Sea. There are also many tourist resorts on the coast, the area of Senigallia is especially popular with tourists for its proximity to Emilia-Romagna’s Riviera. The coastal areas of the region, especially those of Ancona, Senigallia, Sirolo and Numana are awarded the blue flag every year in accordance with European standards for their clean, pristine beaches. The Conero Riviera is particularly lovely with its rocky beaches that are part of the protected area of the Conero Regional Park. The beaches of Portonovo and Mezzavalle are also very popular. Ancona is the city of choice for those who wish to go sightseeing, but many tourists also visit the sanctuary in Loreto or opt instead to spend their holiday in the hills. Other industries besides tourism in this area are agriculture, many different fruits and vegetables are grown here and obviously there are many shipping yards near the port. There is also an oil refinery in Falconara Marittima, an ancient paper mill in Fabriano and Castelfidardo is well known for its production of musical instruments.
