Aosta The province of Aosta is in fact not a province at all since the Aosta Valley is the only Italian region with no provinces and is instead divided into seventy four municipalities. Aosta is the largest city in the region and other large municipalities are Chamois (the only municipality in Italy which is accessed exclusively on foot or by cable car), Quart (famous for its huge castle extended between the XII and XVII centuries that belonged to one of the most important noble families in the Aosta Valley). The Valley of Comboé (a beautiful green valley with lovely woods) is great for walking excursions, whilst the green Valley of Vertosan is very peaceful and quiet with very few tourists.
