Bed and breakfast Bari
The province of Bari situated on the Murge plateau is famous for its "trulli", prehistoric round huts typical of Alberobello and for the beautiful grottos of Castellana. Towns to visit along the coast are: Molfetta, whose ancient name is Melphicta, a seaside town located on a small peninsula; Monopoli, a lovely fishing town; Altamura, with its two hundred cloisters; Locorotondo famous for its round historic center. There are many fine examples of Apulia Romanesque architecture to be discovered in this province, such as the Cathedral of Giovinazzo and Bitonto which date back to the 11th century, the Cathedral of Ruvo di Puglia, the old Cathedral of Molfetta and of course the splendid Norman Basilica of St. Nicholas of Bari. The region is famous for its fish which arrives fresh each day from the port of Bari but other typical dishes from Apulia are “orecchiette alle cime di rapa”, a type of pasta dish with locally grown vegetables, and “coratella”, a stew of lambs’ lungs, liver and heart. There are many traditional festivals in the region, the largest are the Festival of St. Nicholas, when the locals re-enact the arrival of the body of St. Nicholas by sea, the Carnival of Putignano, one of the oldest carnivals in Italy, and the Holy Week of Molfetta which has two traditional processions.
