Calabria At the southernmost tip of the Italian peninsula, Calabria enjoys an extensive coastline and borders only with the region of Basilicata in the north. Calabria is largely mountainous with the only flat lying land to be found near its coasts. The highest mountain in Calabria is Pollino, also the highest in Southern Italy. Other large mountains include Sila at 1928 meters and Aspromonte at 1955 meters. Calabria is famous for its crystal clear waters, beautiful beaches and stunning landscapes. Among the most popular tourist destinations are: Tropea, Diamante, Praia a Mare, Palmi, Soverato, Scilla, Reggio, Catanzaro, Cirò Marina and Rocella Ionica. Visitors also flock to Calabria’s mountain resorts found in the National Parks of Pollino, Aspromonte and Sila. There is also much to see inland in Calabria’s historic and characteristic towns and villages where you can visit churches, monasteries and castles, all set in a beautiful countryside. The most important monuments are: the Aragonese Castle in the city of Reggio Calabria, the Church of Saint Bernard of Siena in Amantea, the Aragonese Castle in Belvedere Marittimo, the Cathedral in Palmi, the Cathedral of Assunta in Gerace, the Roman Bridge in Scigliano and the ancient Temple of Hera Lacinia in Crotone. Archaeological sites of interest are to be found in Sibari, Crotone, Reggio, Locri, Rosarno and Vibo Valentia.
