Bed and breakfasts in the region of Campania
Naples is the largest city in Campania and the third largest city in Italy, after Milan and Rome. The city overlooks the beautiful Gulf of Naples and has a varied terrain with fertile flat lands, hills and basins carved into the land from ancient volcano craters. The panorama of Naples is unmistakable with its volcano, Mount Vesuvius, looming in the background and the islands of Capri, Ischia and Procida clearly visible from the coast. The towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum, which stand at the foot of the volcano that destroyed them in 79 A.D, both have preserved undoubtedly the most excellent exemplars of Roman remains in Italy. For centuries, Naples ruled the South of Italy and any trip to Campania must start with a visit to this historic city. To the north lie the green flatlands of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, to the east you’ll find the isolated province of Benevento, whilst the city of Avellino and its surrounding towns, tragically struck by an earthquake in 1980, are hidden behind Mount Vesuvius. The northern coast has numerous sites of Roman and Greek ruins that give an insight into the incredible history of this region, the most famous are perhaps the ancient Greek settlements of Cumae and Puteoli (present day Pozzuoli). The Amalfi coast to the South of Naples offers truly breathtaking views, beautiful beaches and crystal clear waters as does the Sorrentine Peninsula, the Cilento coast, the islands of Capri, Ischia and Procida and also the Gulf of Naples.
