Caserta The province of Caserta is situated in North West Campania, borders with Lazio and Molise and has a coast on the Tyrrhenian Sea. It has a total of 104 municipalities and 880,000 inhabitants. The largest cities are Caserta, Aversa, Marcianise, Maddaloni, Santa Maria Capua Vetere and Capua. There are many monuments and sites of historical interest in this province. The famous Royal Palace of Caserta has beautiful gardens and the lovely church of San Francis of Paola on its grounds. Tourists can visit the old silk factories in San Leucio, a small village in Caserta or alternatively the Church of St. Mary of the Lattani in Roccamonfina. Roccamonfina is also home to the area known locally as “The Devil’s Footprints” where human fossils belonging to the Homo Heidelbergensis were found, believed to date back 350,000 years. The typical products from this area are Buffalo Mozzarella, the sheep’s cheese from Laticauda and the chestnuts from Roccamonfina. Excellent wines are also produced in this area including the wines Asprinio di Aversa and Falerno del Massico and Galluccio.
