Como The province of Como is in North Lombardy on the Swiss border. It has a population of around 560,000 and 162 municipalities, the largest being: Como, Cantù, Mariano Comense, Erba, and Olgiate Comasco. Como’s terrain is quite varied with some mountainous areas (Mount Cardinello is 2,521 metres above sea level) some plains and many valleys including Valcavargna valley, the Vallassina valley, the Valsoda valley and the Intelvi valley. Como is also home to Lake Como, Lake Lugano and Lake Mezzola. There are many monuments to see in Como like the Cathedral and the church of Saint Fidelis, the Voltiano Temple, which houses the Alessandro Volta museum, the Sant’Abbondio Basilica, Villa Olmo and the Baradello castle. In Cantù you can visit the Basilica of Saint Vincent and the Baptistery of St. John the Baptist in Galliano, the church of Saint Ambrose, the Basilica of Saint Paul and Villa Calvi. Erba instead has important First World War monuments and a natural grotto, the Buco del Piombo.
