Fermo The province of Fermo, with its 40 municipalities, is a new province in the Marche region having been created in June of 2004 when the province of Ascoli was divided but only becoming officially recognized as an independent province in 2009. This province has a coast on the Adriatic sea and many hills inland as well as a mountain chain in the Sibylline Mountains National Park. The economy is based on crafts (the production of shoes and hats in particular), on agriculture (fruit, wine and truffles), and on tourism thanks to the provinces’ beautiful countryside, historic towns and artworks. The city of Fermo is of Roman origins and has a medieval historic center and various monuments like the Cathedral of the Assumption, the church of St. Dominic and the art gallery of Palazzo Priori. The Archeological Museum Antiquarium exhibiting many ancient artifacts uncovered in the region is also worth a visit. Porto Sant’Elpidio, a coastal city with very beautiful views, is another important city in the region along with Porto San Giorgio, famous for its small villas that line the promenade and for its Rocca, a fortress hidden in the countryside with its battlement towers (13th Century). Montegranaro has two important monuments; the Church of St. Seraphin and the parish of St. Philip and St. Jacob. Whilst Monte Urano has a 13th century Castle and the church of St. Michael the Archangel, which houses a very precious wooden Crucifix.
