Florence Florence was the birthplace of the Renaissance, and under the Medici rule the city was considered one of the most powerful and important cities in Europe for many centuries. Florence’s historic center is famous world over and houses most of Italy’s finest works of art. However, there are many other areas in Florence to visit. Chianti is a beautiful area that is famous for its wine. Here tourists can go on wine-tasting tours or eat in any of its fantastic restaurants in and around its small villages. Fiesole has remains of an ancient Roman theater. The town of Vinci is famous for being the birthplace of Leonardo Da Vinci and has a museum dedicated to the Renaissance artist. Empoli instead has old city walls dating back to the 15th century. Sesto Fiorentino houses the remains of the Etruscan tomb La Montagnola, and Impruneta is famous for its terracotta. Typical products from this region are olive oil, Chianti wine and the world famous “Florentine Steak”. Typical desserts include “schiacciata”, a typical Easter cake, and “Pan di Ramerino” , a sweet bread with sultanas.
