The province of Grosseto is situated in the vast area known as the Maremma, at the center of an alluvial plain, on the Ombrone river. The province includes part of the Ombrone valley, the western and southern slopes of Mount Amiata, the Colline Metallifere ("Metal-Bearing Hills"), the Argentario promontory and the islands of Giglio and Giannutri. The most popular seaside resorts in the area are Follonica and Castiglione della Pescaia, a small Roman port. Other towns to visit are the medieval town of Vetulonia, the site of an ancient Etruscan settlement, and Roselle, where the remains of the city’s ancient city walls, the forum and the amphitheater can still be seen today. The so called “Tomboli”, stretches of land that connect the Argentario promontory to the mainland, are well known landmarks of this area. The Tombolo of Giannella and the Tombolo of Feniglia created the Orbetello Lagoon which is an important nature reserve. The towns of Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole are particularly lovely with their many coves. The islands of Giglio and Giannutri and the Maremma Park are also must see destinations. Typical dishes from this province include “fettuccine del pescatore”, pasta with sea food, mushroom soup, pheasant stew, lamb stew, risotto with artichokes , “scottiglia”, a wild boar dish, and “acquacotta”, an onion based dish.
