Bed and breakfast Lecce
With coasts on both the Adriatic and Ionian sea the province of Lecce has many beautiful sandy beaches and promontories jutting into the sea. This area has many examples of Baroque architecture: in Otranto you can visit the Cathedral, the Byzantine church of St. Peter, the Aragonese Castle and the church of St. Mary of the Martyrs; the town of Santa Maria di Leuca has a lovely basilica and beautiful views of the coast; Santa Cesarea Terme is well known for its grottos with sulphureous water springs. One of the largest ports in the region is on the island of Gallipoli, connected to the mainland via an eighteenth-century bridge. The town of Nardò has a beautiful old historic center whilst Galatina has many wonderful churches to visit. The Canale del Ciolo, a large canyon, is a spectacular place to visit with its fast flowing creek. An ancient tradition from this province is the dance of the Pizzica, a folkloric dance from the Salento region. Originally it was a intended to be cure for women who had been bitten by a tarantula. The "Festival della Taranta" is also tradition here. Started in 1998 the Festival takes place every year in August. In Novoli there is an annual festival on the 16th of January to honor St. Antony the Abbot. The towns lights an enormous bonfire and there is a long procession carrying candles, called “sugghi”. The Carnival of Gallipoli is perhaps the most colorful and lively festival with its allegoric floats.
