Bed and breakfast Livorno
Livorno has long been an important port. Even the ancient Etruscan civilization recognized its strategic position for trade in the Mediterranean. Later, both the Romans and then the Pisans used it as a port. The province was badly hit by bombings during the Second World War. Important monuments that remain intact are The Old Fort and the New Fort built in the 17th century, the city’s park and the Cisternone, a large Neo-Classical style building. Visitors can take a walk down the avenue Viale Italia to see the port and the cliffs of Antignano, and visit Villa Mimbelli, which houses important works of art by local artists from the end of the nineteenth century. The ancient Etruscan towns of Populonia and Piombino and the provinces’ islands are also interesting places to visit. The island of Elba is a very popular tourist destination because of its many beaches, sport centers and natural hot springs. Portoferraio is home to the magnificent Medici Forts, one of which served as the residence of Napoleon Bonaparte. Typical dishes from this province are “caciucco”, a type of fish soup, “triglie alla Livornese", mullet with a tasty tomato sauce, and black rice with cuttlefish. Typical sweets are “Fruttini”, and “Orecchie di Amman”, almond based pastries.
