Marches Situated between the Adriatic sea and the Apennines the Marche region is remembered for its ancient towns, villages dotted on hilltops, sandy beaches and rocky cliffs. Marche is famous for its paper industry but is also the third most important region in the country for fishing. Visitors come to Marche for the beautiful beaches, the art and monuments to be found in its old towns and the natural beauty of its hilly landscape. The snow capped Sibylline Mountains are particularly beautiful and attract many tourists for skiing and nature walks. Some local specialties from Marche are truffles and their delicious mountain cheeses, hams and salamis, ascolane olives (stuffed with meat and then fried) and “odetto”, a type of fish soup. The most famous wine from this area is Verdicchio which is a dry white wine but other local wines are now becoming more and more popular like Bianchello del Metauro. Tourists to this region can do a range of different things like explore the inland hills, visit the medieval towns of Urbino and Ascoli Piceno or the ancient villages of San Leo and Recanati, go to the popular Catholic pilgrimage site in the town of Loreto or take a trip to Frasassi to see the spectacular grottos there. Tourists can also travel down to the beautiful coastline and the city of Ancona and the town of Pesaro are well worth a visit. Last but not least there is the protected area of the Conero with its truly spectacular landscapes.
