Matera The province of Matera is made up of 31 municipalities and has a population of around 200,000. It is situated in south east Basilicata, borders both the regions of Calabria and Apulia and has a coast on the Ionian Sea. The largest towns are Pisticci, Policoro, Bernalda, Montescaglioso and Ferrandina. Popular tourist destinations are the nature reserves in the area which include The Regional Park of Murgia Materana, which houses numerous important archeological finds which provide evidence of prehistoric man in this area and the Regional Park of Gallipoli Cognato and Lucanian Dolomites where various endangered species of animals and plants can be found. Other sites include the Archeological Museum and the Castle of Bernalda, the Stones of Matera (ancient caverns carved out of the rock face), the old stone churches and the Cathedral in Matera, the Malconsiglio Castle in Miglionico, Rabatana, the ancient fortified village from which the town of Tursi found its origins, the ancient towns of Siris and Heraclea in Policoro, the abbey of Saint Michael the Archangel in Montescaglioso and the Castle of Diego Sandoval di Castro in Nova Siri.
