Novara Novara is an ancient province with a noble past. Walking around the city of Novara traces of the past are clearly visible in the cities layout, its renaissance buildings and its 19th century squares. The basilica of St. Gaudentius with a dome measuring 121 metres and designed by Alessandro Antonelli is the most imposing monument in the city. The Broletto statue is another famous monument which dates back to the middle ages. It is a sculpture of a old man’s face whose eyes are gazing out at the horizon, opposite is a young man whose gaze is directed towards the East. Another important monument is the Cathedral, built in the neo classical style in the 19th century on the ruins of an ancient Romanesque church. The province of Novara is immersed in woodlands and overlooked by the great glaciers of Mount Rosa. The province is also home to Lake of Orta and the Ticino Nature Park which is situated on the border with Lombardy and is home to otters, foxes and herons all living in their natural habitat. Novara is famous for its cheeses, especially its Gogonzola cheese which is famous all over the world. The wine here is also excellent as the people of Novara are very dedicated to tending to their vineyards and producing their best wine. The most famous wine from this region is Ghemme.
