Piedmont Piedmont is a largely rural region much like its neighbouring region, Aosta Valley, with of course the exception of the city of Turin, the largest city in the province which has an illustrious history and many sites of cultural interest. The Alps are to the North of Piedmont where there are various ski resorts, like Courmayeur and beautiful nature reserves, like the Gran Paradiso National Park. The town of Barolo with its vineyards, crop fields and extensive rice fields, are to be found to the South. The city of Turin was Italy’s first capital. Today the city still boasts a rich culture and history. Among its many attractions Turin is home to the most important Egyptian museum in the world, second only to the one of Cairo. This region is also famous for its industry and business (the FIAT factories in Turin, the Olivetti factories in Ivrea, its wool industry in Biella) but Piedmont’s humble agricultural roots should not be forgotten. Some of the most highly regarded red wines in Italy come from vineyards in southern Piedmont. Near the city of Turin are the vast and ancient plains of the Po Valley, which in Piedmont are covered by the marshy rice fields in the countryside of Vercelli and Novara. The beautiful alpine valleys are to the North-West of the region and provide a stunning backdrop to the medieval castles and ancient towns of Aosta. The Gran Paradiso National Park is also an oasis of natural beauty and has stunning panoramas of the Alps.
