Potenza The province of Potenza is situated in western Basilicata and it is much larger than the province of Matera, with a population of 390,000. Potenza has over 100 municipalities and many other important towns besides the city of Potenza. Melfi, for example, is an important industrial town with the largest FIAT factory in Europe. Lavello is another industrial but also agricultural town on the banks of the river Ofanto. It was here that the remains of an ancient Neolithic civilization were found along with ruins of an ancient Roman theatre. Other towns of interest include Lauria, a medieval town renowned for its natural springs, Rionero in Vulture, situated on the slopes of the Vulture Mountain where archeological digs have brought to light the remains of a Roman aqueduct and ancient baths, the two lakes of Monticchio are a much loved tourist destination and Venosa, Avigliano and Maratea are all popular seaside towns on the Tyrrhenian Sea.
