Ragusa The province of Ragusa is famous for its Baroque art. Modica is a fine example of this with its Church of St George, as is the city of Scicli with its church The Madre della Madonna delle Milizie, housing beautiful stuccos and frescoes, and its Beneventano Palace. Other beautiful churches include the church of the Holy Mother of Ispica and the church of Our Lady of Graces in Vittoria. On the Ibleo coast we find the town Camerina which has fascinating archaeological remains, such as the temple of Athena, the ancient city walls and the remains of some Hellenic buildings. In Cava d’Ispica there are remains from the Neolithic civilization and the area known as the “Ibleo chequers board” because of its deep Karstic gorges and narrow canyons. Ragusa’s Riviera has a lively bar scene and lots of nightclubs, particularly at Marina di Ragusa, Pozzallo, and Donnalucata, a beautiful ancient village, best viewed arriving from the sea. Typical dishes from this province include “pastieri”, made with lamb and goatling minced meat, “scacce”, pastry filled with broccoli and spinach, “cavati”, a type of ravioli with ricotta cheese. The chocolate from Modica, the “mustazzoli” (almond biscuits), and the amaretti from this area are also excellent.
