Rieti The province of Rieti is in North East Lazio, between Umbria, Abruzzo and the provinces of Viterbo and Rome. This area is mainly hilly and has a population of just 150,000 spread over 73 municipalities. The largest towns and cities are Rieti, Fara in Sabina, Cittaducale, Poggio Mirteto and Borgorose. Since Roman times Rieti has been home to the Sabines, an ancient tribe forever in conflict with the Romans. In the Middle Ages it was attached to the Dukedom of Spoleto and that of Rome but later came to be under the rule of the Church. Local tourism is centered upon the National Parks in the area, the Lucretili Mountains Park, the Sirente-Velino Park, the National Park Gran Sasso, the Laga Hills National Park and the Navegna Mountain-Cervia Mountain Reservation. Tourists also come to visit the prestigious monuments to be found here like the Abbey of Farfa, in Fara in Sabina, that dates back to the 5th century, the medieval palaces in Cittaducale's historic center and the four Franciscan sanctuaries on Mount Terminillo.
