Sassari The province of Sassari is largely low lying with a beautiful coast with many lovely seaside towns and medieval villages hidden in the hills inland. Traces of this province’s long history are still visible today at the archeological site of Monte Accodi where tourists can visit the prehistoric monument with a ziggurat that dates back to 2400 BC. Roman remains can instead be found in the Porto Torres. In the city of Sassari itself the most important monuments include Piazza Castello, which was once the site of an Aragonese castle and is now the site of the military building "La Marmora", which also houses the Sassari Brigade Museum, Corso Trinità, the street where you can see the remains of the ancient city walls, and Piazza Italia, a lovely large 17th century square. The G.A Sanna Anthropological and Archeological Museum houses some remains from the ancient Sardinian Neolithic civilization, and Sassari’s Art Museum exhibits some of the finest works by Sardinian artists. Those interested in architecture should instead see the Ducal Palace and the Roman church of St. Peter in Silki. Also worth a visit is Porto Torres for its beautiful Basilica of St. Gavino and the Antiquarium Turritano, which has important archeological finds, the Roman bridge, the Palace of King Barbaro situated near natural springs and the fascinating archeological site of Monte d’Accoddi. The town of Alghero is also a very interesting place to visit. The town, of Catalan origin, has many towers and is encircled by a defensive wall. Here you can visit the Church of St. Michael, and the gothic Church of St. Francis. In the surrounding area you can visit the ancient cemetery of Anghelu Ruju, the Nuraghe of Palmavera, the Grotto of Neptune and the Regional Park of Porto Conte. The so-called “Valley of the Nuraghi” is to be found between Torralba and Bonorva. The best beach destination is Stintino, which has beautiful, clean sandy beaches. Other popular destinations include the Nature Reserve of Asinara, an oasis of varied flora and fauna, the Elephant’s Rock, a naturally formed sculpture in the rocks, the Castle of Goceano and Lake Baratz.
