Trapani The province of Trapani is situated in western Sicily and has both hilly areas and a long coast with many bays. There are many important sites of archeological interest: in Segesta there is a magnificent Doric temple and in Selinunte there are the ruins of some Hellenic temples. Nearby is the Nature Reserve of the Mouth of the Belice River. The ancient Punic small island of Mozia is also worth a visit for its Tophet, a type of cemetery where sacrifices were offered to the goddess Tanit, and its house of mosaics. At the highest point of the island, on the summit of Mount St. Julian, is the splendid town of Erice. For the best views head to the Nature Reserve of the Zingaro and the Salt Flats of Trapani and Paceco, whose landscape is enriched by the typical windmills. The most famous islands of this province are Favignana, Levanzo, and Marettimo. The city of Marsala is famous for its wine whilst Mazzara del Vallo is one of the most important fishing ports in the Mediterranean and much visited for its bronze statue, called the Dancing Satyr, which is held in the archeological museum. The influences of centuries of foreign rule can be seen in Trapani’s traditional food, like its Cous Cous which is a typical Arab dish. Many dishes are made with tuna, but perhaps the most famous dish from this area is the “Pesto a la Trapanese”, which is made using local almonds.
