Trento The province of Trento is largely mountainous and is situated in the Adige River Valley next to the Mounts Bondone and Raganella. Trento was named Tridentum in Roman times and was an important stopping point for the legions travelling northwards on their conquest of the towns and cities beyond the Alps. In the 16th century Trento flourished under the rule of Bernardo Cesio who greatly expanded the city, restored the Buonconsiglio Castle to its former glory by building the Magnum Palace. The landscape of this province is truly spectacular with its views of the majestic Dolomites, the Fassa Valley and the greens of the hills which contrast the deep reds and purples of the Dolomites at sunset, a natural phenomenon known as “Enrosadira”. In the Fiemme Valley there are many resorts where you can go hiking, climbing and skiing like the Alpe di Cermis resort with its modern ski lifts or the Latemar and Bellamonte-Lusia ski centers. Madonna di Campiglio is also a popular destination with tourists who come to ski, free ride and snowboard. The Stelvio National Park in the Sole Valley is instead a must see for nature lovers. The province has many traditional festivals, many of which are based on ancient witch hunts, like the Brava Part in Folgaria. During the Carnival in Cembra the medieval tradition of the “Canta dei Mesi”, or the “Song of the Months”, a type of play representing the changing seasons. Typical dishes from this province include Nordic dishes like “gulasch”, “canederli”, eel a la Trentina and “strangolapreti” (a type of pasta similar to gnocchi but made with spinach). Typical sweets are apple strudel and Zelten (a cake typically made at Christmas time). Excellent DOC wines from the province are Moscato, Merlot and Teroldego.
