Bed and breakfasts in the region of Umbria
Even though it is situated in the heart of Italy Umbria is a relatively isolated region that, despite many centuries of foreign rule, has always managed to maintain its own strong sense of identity and culture. Its landscape inspires a sense of tranquility with its mountains and small villages, castles and medieval monasteries dotted on the hillsides. Tourists from all over the world come to visit Umbria’s ancient towns and cities, especially in summer when the largest city of the region, Perugia, holds its annual Jazz Festival. Smaller towns like Gubbio, Montefalco and Todi have beautiful frescoed churches, old town halls and medieval historic centers. The ancient city of Spoleto, famous for its Festival of the Two Worlds, has many medieval monuments, Roman remains and some of the most beautiful Romanesque churches in Italy. The town of Assisi is home to the beautiful Basilica of St. Francis which houses frescoes by Giotto and Cimabue. Orvieto, situated on the flat summit of a large volcanic rock, has one of the most beautiful Roman-Gothic cathedrals in Italy and is the site of many ancient Etruscan settlements. Umbria’s oak forests, fertile soil, creeks and lakes allow this region to produce some of the best truffles, wines, olive oil, trouts and mountain cheeses. The region is also famous for its lentils from Castelluccio, its ham from Norcia and its wines from the areas of Forgiano and Montefalco. A good place to start a tour of this region is from either of the two most famous towns, which are Assisi and Spoleto. A trip to the region would not be complete without first seeing Perugia’s historic center and the lovely hillside towns of Gubbio, Spello, Montefalco and Todi. Umbria is also home to the stunning National Park of the Sibylline Mountains, the Great Plain, and the Valnerina Valley.
