Viterbo Located in North West Lazio, the province of Viterbo has around 300,000 inhabitants and a total of 60 municipalities. The largest towns are Viterbo, Civita Castellana, Tarquinia, Montefiascone, Vetralla and the town of Bolsena, situated on the lake which shares its name. The local economy is based on agriculture (there are many vineyards in Montefiascone and the surrounding areas, and the local grapes produce an excellent D.O.C. wine) on industry and on tourism. The tourism industry has grown considerably in this area after numerous monuments throughout the province were brought to light, for example the St. Lawrence Cathedral and the Papal Palace in Viterbo, the Necropolis in Castel d'Asso just outside the capital and the Romanesque churches of Tuscania, the Pentagonal Fort in Civita Castellana, the Etruscan Necropolis in Tarquinia and Tuscania where there have been many important archeological discoveries that shed much light on how the Etrurian people lived.
