What is a bed and breakfast?

A new type of hospitality:

bed and breakfast

The term bed and breakfast is actually a British term, more commonly known as B&B, and is literally a “bed and breakfast”, i.e. a type of lodging which includes breakfast. Basically, b&b indicates accommodations in private homes.

This type of lodging, which has mainly British origins, is now widespread throughout the world and has become popular even in Italy where it is meeting with increasing success. In fact, more and more people are deciding to stay in a b&b due to the informal atmosphere, unquestionable savings, and ambiance which is not as cold as traditional hotels. However, in some cases staying in a bed and breakfast can also become an exclusive solution (imagine staying in a landmark home or prestigious dwelling). The main differences from hotels involve the lower number of rooms, custom service and special rapport visitors have with personnel which creates an atmosphere where “you feel at home”.

Italian law requires that the number of rooms is limited, the rooms are regularly cleaned and linens changed. Breakfast usually includes precooked foods which can be reheated but are not handled by the owners: basically a menu of bread, zwieback, brioches, jam, jelly, butter, milk, coffee and orange juice. However, breakfast is usually plentiful and served according to local traditions.

However, running a bed and breakfast is also a real lifestyle; a real cultural exchange between those who provide this service and those who use this new accommodation formula and enter into direct contact with the customs, traditions, habits and culture of the bed and breakfast where they stay.
